Farragut North went into rehearsals late this summer, while I was playing Benvolio in Romeo and Juliet, at First Folio Theatre in Oak Brook. A few weeks into the rehearsal process I was relieved to be closing R and J, as much fun as it was, I was ready to focus on the monumental task of playing Stephen Bellamy. The challenging role is now better known as Stephen Meyers in the Ryan Gosling and George Clooney movie, Ides of March. As the production inched toward dress rehearsals I was cast as the lead in a short film titled OMG. Shooting nights and early mornings and rehearsing at night provided some challenges, but also created an interesting parallel between my life and the life of the character that I was playing. Apparently being sleep deprived, exhausted, and running on adrenaline was exactly what the role needed. The show opened an quickly became a hit. Farragut North became a favorite of audiences, Jeff judges, and critics alike. Here are some of the critical high-lights:

Brian Plocharczyk, whether with tear filled emotionality or single minded passion, creates an indelible portrait of a soul caught in the crossfire with his Stephen.

- Brian Kirst Sheridan Road Magazine

Plocharczyk has just two sweet spots here — he can play the hell out of cocksure moments, as well as the guy’s intensely rattled transformation…

- Nina Metz Chicago Tribune

The Cast

Plocharczyk is stellar as hyper-articulate Stephen, channeling the easy charm of Bradley Cooper, the affability of Adam Scott and the calculated chatter of Jesse Eisenberg. -Lauren Whalen Chicagotheatrebeat.com

Plocharczyk sparkles with charisma in the play’s first half… -Kris Vire Time Out Chicago

Plocharczyk must carry this dazzling show on his shoulders and he does so very well. By turns he is ruthless, inspired, paranoid, vengeful and ambitious. Through it all he retains a core of likability and charm even as his actions grow progressively more despicable. This is a man who aspires to a kind of demigod like power, but is continually thwarted by his own messy humanity. - Rory Lehy Centerstagechicago.com

It has been a whirlwind 7 weeks since Enemy of the People closed. Mother Bear by Jayme McGhan is rehearsed and open. Romeo and Juliet with First Folio starts rehearsals in just a few days.

I had an eventful and successful trip to Las Vegas for a trade show, and I now have a home recording studio set up, and I am proud to say that I booked my very first job that I auditioned from home. Mother Bear opened on May 27th to a sold out crowd, and runs Thursdays through Sundays at the Anthenaeum Theatre through June 19th. Here are some of the things reviewers have said about me and the rest of the cast thus far.

“The play revolves around ambitious young lawyer Freeley (played with a fresh wit by Brian Plocharczyk)”-Kirby Brown

Freely and Deliah

“Jason Boat’s smart, committed cast provide vivid performances for this Mortar Theatre premiere.”- Justin Hayford

Freely

“Plocharczyk gives a multi-dimensional, transformational performance. He starts out cocky, shifts into goofy, idles in conniving and backs into poignant. His range of emotion is captivating.”- Katy Walsh

Come check out the show if you can, tickets are available at www.mortartheatre.org.

I’m also excited to announce that I’ll be playing Stephen Bellamy in the Chicago Premiere of Farragut North at Theatre Wit with Stage Left this fall. Our production will open just before the George Clooney helmed adaptation hits movie theaters. Ryan Gosling is playing the Stephen role in the film. I know, I know, we are like twins separated at birth. Keep an eye out for updates on this and all of the other acting work I have going on in the next few months.

And finally, on a sad note the world lost a great agent and an amazing friend this week. Mickey Grossman co owner of Grossman Jack Talent passed away after his battle with cancer. Mickey was a great friend and advocate, always willing to go the extra mile to help in any way he could. I am incredibly grateful for the time I spent with Mickey and wish his family the best. God’s Speed my friend. I hope they have College Basketball in heaven.

Along with the show, the rest of my career seems to bubbling over as well. Immediately after Enemy of the People closes, I’ll be flying off to Vegas for a trade show for a few days. I then will launch directly into rehearsals for Mother Bear with Mortar Theatre. I’m extremely excited to reprise the role of Freely which I played in the Leapfest production of the show last summer. From that production I will be diving head first into Romeo and Juliet with First Folio Shakespeare. I will play Benvolio and also understudy Romeo. So, with the spring and summer fully loaded up with projects, there will be lots of opportunities to see me perform.

Stay posted for more details…

This past 6 weeks has been insanely busy. I have been going full steam ahead working on two theatre productions, a tradeshow, a couple of voice over spots and of course auditions auditions auditions. Trying to maintain all of these different creative ventures while still teaching and training and working medical school projects has been exhausting, but hopefully the fruits of that labor will be worth it.

The majority of my time has been dedicated to rehearsals for An Enemy of The People, with my company Stage Left Theatre. I’m excited to say that we will be going into previews this Friday, February 25th with our official opening being March 1st. It has been really great to work on such a detailed script, the more layers we peel back the more layers we keep discovering. Who knew there is comedy in Ibsen? This an amazing and talented cast and I’m very proud of all of the work being done by my fellow company members and our guest artists. Here are some of the efforts of load in. A sneak peak of our amazing set.

Sneak a Peak

Since we are now headed into tech I’ll probably be to busy to post anything again for a couple of weeks. Come check out this really powerful piece of classic theatre. An Enemy of The People runs Thursdays through Sundays February 25th through April 3rd.

My other theatrical production is at Concordia College, Jayme McGhan’s play Hellfire. This has been a blast to work on as a fight director. The students at Concordia were great to work with; hard working and passionate they all picked up their choreography quickly, despite having limited experience and shortened rehearsal time due to the blizzard we experienced in the Chicago area a few weeks ago. All of my rehearsal time was under the gun, high speed, and fast and furious, so I felt bad that I had to often give notes by character names because we were working under such tight time restraints. Between the sword fights, murders, rapes, an beatings we had a lot of ground to cover and they did a great job of meeting the demands of what would be asked of actors at a professional level. Oh and I almost forgot about the sacrifice scene. During one of the rehearsals we hit the second or third row with blood.

Here is a clip from a dress rehearsal.

http://www.youtube.com/embed/wtCRpZ_8WhQ”

They have one more weekend to run. So if you are out in Chicago’s westen suburbs go check out Hellfire at Concordia College through February 26th.

Commercially I have been busy as well. In the midst of all of my theatre madness I traveled to Orlando to do some trade show work for Philips. It was a a short trip with a lot of time on the floor, but it was also a lot of fun. Here are some clips and photos from this job as well as a previous Philips gig.

Street Team Video #1

Somewhere in there I also managed to record a couple of tv demo’s, and a radio spot for a regional cell service. So like I said …..I’ve been a little busy.

Posted in Acting Gigs

Sunday marked the begining of an epic rehearsal process as Stage Left Theatre as we mount our first classic play in … I’m guessing 10-15years. Don’t hold me to that, but it has been a while. With a massive cast assembled in our tiny rehearsal room in the offices on Sheffield, we heard presentations from the design team about the what’s, why’s and how’s of our version of this Ibsen/ Miller masterwork. We were all really excited to see that this play will be set in the 1950′s and incorporate some really cool innovative design concepts. Here is a preview of what the set will look like.

Enemy of the People

After all of the presentations we launched into a full read through and it was great to see the story come to life. I wasn’t sure what I expected, but what I witnessed was great. All of the really talented cast brought life to the play in a way that i did not expect especially on the first read through. The play is powerful and surprisingly funny. I’ll keep you posted as the production develops.
